About My Shop

Welcome to Maiden Moss. I’m currently a one-woman-business in Round Rock, a suburb of Austin, TX. I make terrarium lights in my home studio by hand. All of my terrariums are one of a kind and born from my own creative inspiration and skills. As an eco-minded studio, I try to source all my materials ethically and sustainably. Although I am still learning and tweaking my methods, I strive to be as gentle on the environment as possible, and hope to fuel your heart with inspiration. Welcome! I’m so glad you're here.

Background

I have fond memories of my mom’s tarot reading phase when I was young. She loved tiny intricate boxes and witchy TV shows (Charmed and Angel are the first that come to mind). And the living room was always a vibe: tea candles everywhere, ornate pull-chain lamps, 90’s sun and moon decor, and Enigma over the surround system.

These days I prefer my home to be more Scandinavian and minimalist. But, that passion for tarot and all things witchy has sparked up with a vengeance. I wanted to create something that brought a spiritual, natural ambience without feeling like clutter. Something I could make with my own two hands with full creative license and just let the kid in me have fun.

What I ended up with was a weird mixture of a decorated terrarium…night light...fairy garden…thing? There’s nothing else quite like them, and that uniqueness is something I’ve always found myself happily marinating in.

A Little Bit About Me

I was born and raised in Elkhart, Indiana and moved to Austin, Texas in 2019 with my husband Chad, and my cat Bear. Coming from a factory town, Austin had much more potential in the music scene. I’m in the midst of launching my career as a musician, performing at local coffee shops and street corners for fun! I’m not looking to become a household name or anything; I just want to be the background music that makes people calm and content. Much like the ambience that my terrarium lights provide.

I love to travel and try to take one major trip every year. So far, my favorites are the Scottish highlands and Stockholm, Sweden!

I’m an introvert, and you’ll typically catch me listening to either hard rock/metal, or jazz. In my free time I enjoy ice skating, Irish dancing, reading tarot cards and runes, playing indie video games, attending Renaissance fairs, taking care of my houseplants and being out in nature!

I’ve battled with imposter syndrome, stage fright and unmedicated ADHD tendencies for most of my life which is a cocktail for continued…learning (I try to use “failure” sparingly).

Lastly…

I love rocks and moss. I love dried flowers and miniature things. I love terrariums and candles. I love stamps and drawing. I love moody lighting. And I especially love sharing all those things and the ambience they provide with other people!

Where did the name Maiden Moss come from?

The name came to me pretty quickly (which is incredibly rare). This train of thought started first with the image of a modern maiden. Simply a woman…in all her natural beauty and wrath. Then came the notion that humans are all made from nature. As if we were raised from the moss by some spiritual power. So, I thought Made in Moss and naturally landed on Maiden after saying it out loud since I knew this would be a woman-owned and operated business. Women are all maidens under mother nature’s power. Woman are mother nature. And this woman happens to love moss. It just felt right for the handmade items I was planning to create.

I liked the idea that saying Maiden Moss would lead the listener to wonder whether it’s made in or maiden. Keep them on their toes ;). So, in the end it works both ways!
